"Gartner has been covering the role of the CDO since 2012. As an information scientist, I was not alone in my concern about the neglect of organizing and categorizing electronically stored information. We were relying too heavily on technology to do the tasks that only people could, namely to structure information so that it had meaning in context. Believing technology would solve this problem, we built search engines and insight engines, taxonomies and ontologies, databases, warehouses and lakes. As technologies came and went, or came and stayed, the elusive goal of ‘the right information to the right person at the right time’ remained just that: Elusive. Now, AI/ML is going to solve our information management problems. Prediction: it won’t. Time to try something else alongside all the technology."
CDO: The Right Executive for the Right Role at the Right Time
The role of the Chief Data Officer, a data and analytics focused business executive, emerged as a result of the deluge of data that engulfed us all in the new millennium. In December 2012, we counted (yes, we counted them) about 100 CDOs worldwide. In 2015, we did our first qualitative survey of CDOs: Biggest issue – conflict with the CIO. In 2016 we were able to conduct a quantitative survey. By the beginning of this year we counted (yes, we still count them) over 10,000 individuals with the title of CDO, worldwide. My team speak to individuals every day who are performing as CDOs, though do not necessarily have the title. And if you are wondering, CIOs and CDOS are now (mostly) working together as allies."
